Nintendo shut down another of its online services this week as part of the gradual shutdown of various supported features on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. This time, those who were stuck on that console and mobile device won’t be able to post photos from their games to social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. It’s a small feature to say goodbye to, but another one that stands out from the list towards the ultimate end of being able to purchase games on these platforms through the Nintendo eShop.
Like sunsets in other Nintendo 3DS and Wii U features, Nintendo has said for some time that this “photo publishing tool” will be discontinued in the future, and as of this week, that day has come. It officially closed on October 25 with Nintendo social accounts confirmed.
“After service, you will not be able to post images from the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U series,” reads the Nintendo support page regarding this topic. “Photos and comments posted to Facebook and Twitter can be seen on every SNS even after service ends.”
Back in May, Nintendo cut out other features for these devices that were more important than this one: the ability to fund accounts with credit cards to make purchases via the eShop. This feature has already been discontinued with players and then left to redeem Nintendo eShop cards to fund their purchases, but in August, this feature was removed as well. Purchases can still be made through these platforms’ storefronts, but only through detours like adding money to your Nintendo Switch account and then using the same account to buy things on your 3DS or Wii U.
With support for these platforms ending, Nintendo fans are left with either the physical versions of the games or products available through Nintendo Switch Online to play. March 2023 will officially end Nintendo eShop purchases that can be made through the 3DS or Wii U, so be sure to grab whatever you’ve been holding onto before that time comes.
